"Quinn, get the camera!"

Jane probably just captured yet another of Daria's embarrassing moments for posterity, but that's okay because today is Camera Day! Which is my best side? I know they're both good.

Today is also the anniversary of the episode "Gifted," which aired on this day in 1998. Daria and Jodie learned to their surprise that Lawndale High is actually the lesser of two evils. Who knew?

Boxing with Captain Kangaroo

Brittany's wishing a happy birthday full of bouncity bounce to the late Bob Keeshan, also known as Captain Kangaroo, who was born on this day in 1927. Keeshan played the character on the children's show for almost 30 years, and there's a very good chance Jake and Helen grew up watching it. Unless Mad Dog had some kind of issue with it, of course. Damn you, old man!

Fanfic Update!
  • A Butterfly Effect, by Indigo (COMPLETE!): "Sometimes a small moment of distraction can have big consequences."

  • Dressing for Disaster, by PrecambrianStudios (parts 1 and 2): "Cassidy Hemming, a petite sophomore student with large spectacles and long red hair, saw Tom Sloane walk across the courtyard, yards and yards away from the wooden, gum-ridden bench. Her heart fluttered and leapt into her throat." (Part 2)

  • Fashion Hunters, by Sylvia_Locust (COMPLETE!): "'Dean?' his father asks, rubbing a hand across his tired eyes. 'Sir?' 'What’s your brother wearing on his feet?'"

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (parts 7 and 8): "Amelia Pines was born into an Air Force family and moved about the country - and also spent time in Germany - until the age of 12, when her parents settled in Limerick, Maine. It would be a stereotype to say that this left her socially awkward and timid around people, and also very accurate." (Part 8)

  • Possibilities, by Sureia (part 8): "She all but vibrated with enthusiasm and importance at her good fortune, taking dainty bites out of her salad. Helen smiled indulgently at her. It was so refreshing to see her daughters flourishing in their new environment."

  • Renewment, by RLobinske (part 7): "Jake knocked on the front door and they waited for a moment before Trent answered it. 'Hey, come on in. Oh yeah, Lindy and Jane kinda set up a party for you.'"

  • Stacy's Newly Made Man, by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "As the pervert chatted her up, undressing her come hither outfit with his eyes. Stacy Rowe went through the motions of being coy but curious, the very essence of a naiveté teenage girl looking for an older man to 'make a woman of her'."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Princess_Pasta (parts 2 and 3): "--- was enjoying a French fashion magazine in the quiet, solitude of her dorm room when Sandi made her unexpected entrance. --- didn't take kindly to being disturbed, especially by someone who didn't even have the decorum to knock before entering a room." (Part 3)

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (part 24): "Ever since she found out about the nature of the Loops, Daria had been trying to play things safe. She really didn't want to risk doing something to alienate Jane just as she Awoke."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'But... what?' Jodie's face was lined with disbelief as Mack, a guitar in hand as he sat atop a lunch table with girls gathered all around him, shrugged and reached for a cookie that Stacy thoughtfully handed him."

Some Boxes Are More Equal Than Others

Daria's wishing George Orwell a happy birthday, as the author of one of her favorite books, Animal Farm, was born on this day in 1903. Orwell also wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four, which Daria references in "Psycho Therapy."

And speaking of Young Daria, today is also the anniversary of "Boxing Daria," which aired on this day in 2001. It's thanks to that episode that I can never look at a refrigerator box the same way again.

Tickled Pink or Feeling Sick?

Quinn is ready to greet another National Pink Day, while Daria is asking someone else to hold the camera for a minute. She needs to excuse herself for mental health reasons. Or to grab some holiday-themed Pepto Bismol.

Fanfic Update!
  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 13): "Daria had avoided Luke for a week and a half but knew she should call him soon. After turning down a couple more dates from other guys, and girls, she works up the courage to pick up the phone and calls Luke. 'Um, hey Luke.'"

  • Daria's pregnancy, by sparklingdaria (part 10): "Helen stared down at the pregnancy test she said 'Now what am I going to do? Quinn still lives here with her baby, I babysit for Daria's kids Maggie and Serafina often and Quinn has post natal depression! How am I going to cope with another child?!'"

  • Dee Dee & Crazy-dy, by ognawk (part 2): "'My my, good day, luscious lady.' Cassidy finally closed the locker and saw a boy with curly red hair, freckles and a leering grin. 'Who are you?' Cassidy asked with a frown."

  • Fielding Forever, by Princess-Pasta (part 2): "'Jamie!' Both of them stopped and turned in time to see a group of three girls approaching. The one who called was a wavy-haired brunette who had the haughty demeanor of someone who thought highly of themselves."

  • Mine, by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Daria was exhausted; both physically and mentally fourteen hours of labor would do that to anyone."

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (part 6): "Trent will not say how he feels but he did bust into an a capella version of Betrayal. His friends and wife have confirmed that he was hurt: 'Mark left him miserable and tuned into some dark anti-vibes, and not in the good way that he normally did,' says Tulip."

  • Shake, Shake, Quiver and Quake, by Kristen Bealer (COMPLETE!): "...Don't look down. Whatever you do, don't look down! Jake could see that he'd almost reached the top of the climbing rope. A couple more feet and he'd be within reach of the little flag hanging there, waiting for him to grab it. Just. Don't. Look. Down. He looked down." (Part 5)

  • Transplanted Hippie (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Shiva (part 4): "'I still can't believe that you guys talked me into this.' Ethan muttered to Elsie as they followed in Tom's wake as he bounded for the car they were borrowing for the night."

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (parts 22 and 23): "One advantage of having a brother like Trent was that he didn't question little things like his sister and another girl setting up to fight in the backyard." (Part 23)

I Think, Therefore I Skate

Daria is enjoying Go Skateboarding Day with more than usual (for her) enthusiasm. In fact, we might want to check her pupils just in case she's in the middle of some kind of glitterberries-induced hallucination. Still, she's got some pretty good moves.

Today we also celebrate the birthday of Jean-Paul Sartre, who was born on this day in 1905. I'm sure he had Quinn's wardrobe and accessories in mind when he helped develop the philosophy of existentialism.

Would You Like Yours Shaken or Stirred?

Jake's got the right idea on this fine National Martini Day, and he's clearly in a better mood than usual. I'm not sure if it's because of the martini, though. It could just as easily be that Garfield said something funny.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 18): "'We're spending a week in Hawaii, in a treehouse? This is your idea of cool?' Daria crossed her arms, fixing him with a glare."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 12): "'Tony and I are going to the arts building tonight. Dantanius and Amalia are having a paint off. It should get interesting. You?' 'Nothing.' 'Then come with us.'"

  • Daria's pregnancy, by sparklingdaria (part 9): "Quinn looked at baby Matthew and said 'Isn't he the cutest little thing?'"

  • Fielding Forever, by Princess-Pasta (part 1): "Daria Morgendorffer ran her fingers over the Fielding crest that emblazoned the right side of her blazer. The letters: F, A, M, A, stood for a motto that she was now forced to uphold. Facultas, amicitia, manentia, audacia: ability, friendship, permanency, boldness. The words had no meaning to her."

  • Flat out Daria, by EntrancedCat (COMPLETE!): "'Oh no, kiddo,' her father said unable as usual to catch the sarcasm in his oldest daughter's flat, even tone. 'Today you and Quinn are gonna learn how to change a flat tire.'"

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (part 5): "It seemed like the band finally had a basis for ongoing success. 'And then they did a Spiral,' says Daria."

  • Shake, Shake, Quiver and Quake, by Kristen Bealer (parts 2 and 3): "'Buck up, Jake. If we do die out there, at least we'll die together.' Sitting up, Jake gave Randy a shaky smile. 'And maybe we'll take a few of the bastards down with us.' 'That's the spirit! Now let's go meet our doom!'" (Part 3)

  • Star Trek: Daria - Resurrection, by echopapa (part 9): "While Daria waited, she mused over the past few days. The adventure with Wesley in the holodeck had made her forget for a while, but she once again was faced with the overwhelming fact that she was stranded in a time over 300 years past her own, and absolutely everyone that she ever knew was dust."

  • Transplanted Hippie (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Shiva (parts 2 and 3): "'Sink or swim, Ethan. Sink or swim...'" (Part 3)

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Vukodlak (COMPLETE!): "Unbeknownst to Clayton one of the new students he'd just soaked with a water hose was seventh grader Catherine Kain. It was ironic that her torment and humiliation came from water seeing as her family fortune was founded on a popular brand of bottled water. While the other girls ran she sat there and fumed before deciding to do something about it."

  • Unnamed story ([Iron Chef – Round Robin – Free For All] Time Loops), by Wraith (part 21): "'Remember that usually-a-guy named Ranma you mentioned?' Daria nodded. 'One of the original Loopers. I take it you met him?'"

  • What is Fashion?, by Smijey (part 7): "Mr. DeMartino began to laugh. He laughed for a solid two minutes, which began to really unnerve Sandi. 'Okay, Sandi. I'll tell you what fashion is.'"

Give Me Your Tired, Your Snarky....

Looks like Jane has finally realized her dream of visiting New York City, because she's reenacting the Statue of Liberty's arrival there on this day in 1885. She seems pretty pleased with herself, but I hope her arm isn't getting tired, because she needs that to paint with.

Today is also Eat Your Vegetables Day, so I hope Kevin and Brittany kept one of the bags they brought to Andre Sakarynsky's Last Meal.

A Great Father and an Expert Chugger

Jake's just enjoying a small drink to celebrate Father's Day, although it's also possible that he recently heard that Rita's coming for a visit. Or he had another flashback about his father. Or the credit card bill came in the mail. Whatever the case may be, happy Father's Day to any of you out there who are Dads!

Something important happened on this day in Angelinhel's story "61501," but I'm not going to spoil it for you if you haven't read it yet.

Fanfic Update!
  • Ah, Hell, by metameric1 (part 17): "'You can't be serious.' She reached out and took his hand. 'This is an offer from a record label. Isn't this what you've been working towards?'"

  • Daria's pregnancy, by sparklingdaria (part 8): "Daria woke up at 3 in the morning with bad stomach cramps, early sign of labour."

  • Friday the 13th, by Princess_Pasta (part 1): "Daria Morgendorffer stared down at the faded letters, her eyes taking in every crack and inch of dust covering the wooden board. She honestly couldn't believe Jane was feeding into all of the Friday the 13th nonsense."

  • Quarton, by neonhomer (part 2): "'Dead...' She said aloud, to no one in particular. 'Where is this place?' 'A limbo, of sorts.' Said Quarton."

  • Shake, Shake, Quiver and Quake, by Kristen Bealer (part 1): "A bugle blared, waking Jake Morgendorffer with a start. The sixteen-year-old cadet looked around at the drab, unpainted wooden walls of the barracks at Buxton Ridge Military Academy and sighed."

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Brother Grimace (COMPLETE!): "'Hey, Daria - love the hat.'" (Part 2) (Part 3)

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Ashley Winters and his girlfriend Jane Lane were sat in the Fielding lunch room. Jane had a wide smile on her face as she passed a sheet to Ashley. 'You got a B+ in Math?' Ashley said as he looked at the paper and handed it back, 'Impressive.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Roentgen (COMPLETE!): "'So, Michael,' Sue asked. 'I really need an escort for my deb party, and I think you'd be perfect for it.' Mack couldn't believe it. 'Sorry, Sue, but I don't think this is a good idea.'"

  • Unnamed story (Iron Chef: Everyone Goes to Fielding), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "Ethan Yeager dragged a hand through his shorn hair, it still felt weird to have it cut so short. However the reason for his former mane to be history wasn't just because he had had to deal with his parents arrest and trial for drug dealing."

  • Unnamed story (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Silver (COMPLETE!): "'They knew I was coming, Cass. And the security wasn't exactly on the Republic's Select List.' Quinn smirked as Cassie's eyes boggled."

Fanfic Update!
  • The Baby Booze (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "Jane had a feeling of trepidation as she walked up to the front door of the house. Visiting in the middle of the day at the weekend was a risky thing - hell, visiting any time was risky - but she made a promise, and she was going to keep it."

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 11): "She was finally free from home, Lawndale, and the old life. Now she would have Boston, College, and a new life."

  • The Death of Grandma Barksdale (Scenes No Daria Fan-Fic Should Have: No longer in the 1%), by Shiva (COMPLETE!): "In a ridiculously opulent bedroom in an even more ridiculously opulent mansion that would have made Louis XIV say, 'This is too much, tone it down!' an old woman by the name of Georgina Veronica Edith Barksdale."

  • God Save The Great And Good (Shorty Shorts), by ognawk (COMPLETE!): "He parked the car nearby and both of them got out of the car. Tom looked at the sign near the door. 'The Zon. This is the place,' he said."

  • A Hope of Doubt, by LuxKen27 (COMPLETE!): "Trent stood in the center of the stage and stared out into the cavernous space around them. It was hard to believe that, in a few short hours, Madison Square Garden would be filled to capacity with Mystik Spiral fans, rabid and casual alike."

  • Lyrics, by JPAGC (COMPLETE!): "Trent made a break from looking at the cracks in the ceiling to return staring at his song notebook. However, the page hadn't changed from last time. It was still blank."

  • Ow! My Ears - The Mystik Spiral Story, by Charles RB (parts 2 - 4): "That was it for Mystik Spiral: grunge was their sound. The raw intensity and underground passion was everything they'd been looking for." (Part 3) (Part 4)

  • The QB's Cousin, by Matryoshka-Sweetheart (part 1): "When Kevin's parents had told him his cousin Vera was coming to live with them for the foreseeable future, he had to jog his memory (or rather, his mother had to) before the memory of a grey eyed, brown haired girl came up."

  • Quarton, by neonhomer (part 1): "Jane had her back to the argument. She didn't want to get drug into the foray again."

  • Spiraling Out, by Princess-Pasta (parts 1 and 2): "The sweltering summer sun beat down on the top of Trent Lane's head, sending sweat raining down his forehead. Fanfic Update!
  • Behind the Counter, by NightGoblyn (part 10): "'Man, it must suck to have to work Christmas.'"

  • Daria 2097, by cfardell_Brenorenz29 (part 1): "The lower-middle aged man put aside his tablet (from which he was reading the local news) and said. 'You know, girls, it's not easy moving to a whole new town, especially for you, Daria, right?'"

  • Daria: College Pains Redux, by James the Lesser (part 10): "Jane is with her brother in the kitchen as Lindy talks to some one on the phone. 'I promise they're even better in person.
